The Kirkcaldy Bands of the '80s

Because music like ours shouldn't die

Adam Smith

The Adam Smith Theatre, named after the economist Adam Smith, who was Kirkcaldy's most famous son, apart from Bill Gimix and Scotty. Adam Smith was the guy who invented capitalism in the 18th century in his ground breaking page turner "the Wealth of Nations." Having a theatre named after him confused us locals a bit though, as we often assumed he was an actor. The theater was just down the road from the college and I used to use the toilets here sometimes as the ones at the college were crap. Being a huge professional venue, where acts like Frankie Howerd and Ken Dodd played, this place didn't feature large in our lives (apart from the toilets) in the mid 1980's. I think Darlingheart may have played here in the early 1990's, they'd be the only band big enough to fill it in those days. I believe Scotty from the Ghost Train and Andy Carr from Sacristy and the Summerfield Blues work here now.

College 2

Another shot of the college. This time the part of the college that was converted from the old Kirkcaldy High building on St Brycedales avenue.

St clair halls

Not used as a venue as such, apart from one very memorable Crucified Brains gig. This was more of a glorified rehearsal, with Mark and Chez hitting many industrial type things on stage, including a metal bar bumper. This was where I first got involved with playing in bands in Kirkcaldy, I used to go and watch the Crucified Brains rehearsing and later used to practice here many times with a dreadful band I formed with Cameron Campbell and Ian Cargill - we never got beyond endless rehearsals. The very first Surgical Wars rehearsal with Bill was held here too at the end of January 1986, I have a tape of it but it is not much use apart from the wonderful sound I got that day by borrowing Chez's bass amp. This place was full of hard surfaces and the tapes we made here were always full of echo. The early Crucified Brains songs that are on their page were recorded here.

Dysart Miners Welfare (outside)

Despite finding it's address by googling "Dysart Miner's Welfare", it took a number of attempts and some rather odd conversations in a local pub with some girls who I'm sure were born in the '80's, for me to find the building. It's now been re-branded as "Dysart Community Hall".

Although if you look close enough, you can still see the buildings roots.

Dysart Miners Welfare (inside)

Does this pic bring back memories? The inside of the building does not seem to have changed much in the past 20 years. I had a brief look inside the hall when I was there, but there was a meeting going on at the time that I didn't want to interrupt. It always seemed quite a trek to get out here to see bands, but we didn't mind. The recordings of the Crucified Brains last gig that is on their page were recorded here in December on 1985. There are also some pics of the Twist on their page that were taken here. We got talking to the guy who runs this hall for the local community and he's looking for uses for it.......
